Cipollino marble columns

The green marble columns in the main hall are of two types. The lighter green, seen here, with the more vivid veining are Cipollino. These are used in the centre of each wall of the hall. Within each row of four Cipollino columns, pairs with very strong, swirling veining have been placed between another pair with more linear markings.

Here, over the entrance, they support the "pulpit" which overlooks the hall from the balcony. The marble panelling of the walls can be seen in the background, while above the columns the balcony is enclosed in more layers of marble.
