marble hot air fountain

This unusual structure is a kind of central heating and air conditioning system. Hot air comes up through the marble fountain and is deflected by the brass pendant above. This helps to spread the air around the building. In summer the same system used to allow cool air into the centre of the hall. The eight pilars which support the top of the fountain are of a very rare type of Sienna marble. It came from a small quarry in Tuscany which has now been worked out.

Around the base is fine marble inlay work with gilded lions' heads, shown in the next picture.
